“Love is madness” they say
And truly mad it seems
To lay down one’s life
Just so others can live
“Love is patient” they say
A virtue hard won
By thinking of others
And men before time
“Love is hopeful” they say
Not down or depressed
Seeing sunshine in rain
And beauty in pain
“Love is madness” I say
Shakespeare was right
I can’t love myself
And still someone else.
One of the pieces I’m teaching right now is “As You Like It,” in which Shakespeare penned the famous words: “Love is madness!” And it’s famous because its true. Love drives people to do things seeming insane to those looking on. Like moving to Tanzania. Or sending one’s Son to die for the sins that the world committed against You.
